2025 Farmers' Market Schedule
I guess you could say I’m a little excited for spring and really summer that I’m already noting when the Farmer’s Market begins. To us in Madison this is truly the start to summer and we couldn’t be more excited to start getting more local fruits, vegetables, and so much more. The Dane County Farmers' Market begins on the Capitol Square in mid-April 2025!
Outdoor Season: April 13 - November 9, 2025
Saturday Hours: 6:15 AM - 1:45 PM
Location: Capitol Square
Best Times to Visit
Of course this is the best farmers' market around - and that means it can get pretty busy! If you're looking to just stroll and soak in the atmosphere without feeling rushed, plan to visit later in the morning. The crowds may be a little busier at this time but you can still leisurely enjoy the market with a coffee, and people-watch around the Square.
However, if you're like me and actually wanting to get those fresh veggies and fruits for the week, plan to get there as early as possible! The early bird really does get the best picks at the market. Plus, here's a local secret - early morning means easier parking (way closer to the Square!) and you can zip around to your favorite vendors without navigating through the usual crowds. There's something calm and relaxing about being there as vendors are still setting up, the morning light hitting the Capitol, and having the first pick of those fresh pastries and produce.
Photo-Worthy Spots Around the Market
As a photographer, I can't help but get excited about all the picture-perfect moments at our Capitol Square market! Early morning light creates pure magic here - that warm sunrise hitting tables of rainbow-colored produce and casting long shadows across the Square. The Capitol building provides the most stunning backdrop. One of my favorite spots? Those incredible flower stands that burst with color and life - they're like nature's own photo studio! And don't even get me started on the pastry displays... there's something so special about capturing the morning light filtering through steam from fresh coffee and warm croissants. Whether you're using your phone or a camera, these simple market moments tell such a beautiful Madison story.
Tips for Market Photos
When you're taking photos at the farmers' market, sun position is everything. Here's my go-to trick: keep the sun behind you when you're the photographer. This lights up your subject beautifully and makes those produce colors pop! If you're the one in the photo, you'll want that soft light hitting your face - no squinting or harsh shadows.
Sometimes the Capitol Square layout means you can't avoid shooting towards the sun. No problem! Use the buildings around the Square or even the market tents to block that direct light. My favorite hack? Position your subject so the Capitol building or a leafy tree filters that morning sun. This creates the most beautiful, soft light that makes everyone look amazing. Plus, those filtered rays can create some pretty magical effects with market scenes.
Planning your Visit
First things first - it may be helpful to bring some cash. Many vendors accept cards but many vendors still operate cash-only, and you don't want to miss out! Comfort is key when exploring the Square, so wear shoes that are ready for walking (those cobblestones can be tricky!). And here's a local pro tip: bring your own reusable bags - not only is it eco-friendly, but it makes juggling all your market treasures so much easier. When it comes to parking, consider grabbing a spot a few blocks away from the Square. Yes, it's a short walk, but you'll save time searching for that "perfect" spot, plus the stroll through downtown Madison is part of the charm! Last but not least, check that forecast - our Wisconsin weather can be unpredictable, and you'll want to be prepared. Some of my favorite market photos happen on slightly overcast mornings when the light is soft and even!
Want to plan your own market photo session? I always think a family session or even an engagement session would be perfect at the market.
