Winter Maternity Photographs in the Snow: Madison, WI

Why I Love Winter Maternity Photos

There's something so special about taking maternity photos in the winter. I've always wanted to get pictures of my own family in the snow because it's just magical! As someone who loves taking pictures of expecting moms, I've found that winter sessions create beautiful, heartfelt images that families will cherish forever.

Planning Your Winter Maternity Session: My Tips

When to Take Your Photos

The best time for maternity photos is usually when you're about 28-34 weeks pregnant. Your baby bump shows nicely then, and you can still move around comfortably enough for different poses. For winter sessions, making sure mom stays comfortable is super important!

Picking the Perfect Spot

When choosing where to take your snowy photos, don't just settle for any tree with snow on it! Look for pretty snow-covered trails, frozen lakes, or even cute snowy alleyways. The great thing about snow is that it makes everything look clean and simple while adding texture to your photos. And can sometimes be my favorite photographs.

The Best Time of Day

Winter days are shorter, but that means the golden light before sunset lasts longer and looks softer. Try to schedule your session about an hour before sunset to get that dreamy, warm glow against the cool snow. Morning sessions right after fresh snowfall are also amazing because the snow is still untouched!

What to Wear for Winter Maternity Photos

Outfits That Stand Out

Against white snow, bold colors look amazing:

  • Deep red, forest green, or dark blue dresses Cozy textures like velvet or chunky knit sweaters

  • Flowing dresses that can catch the winter breeze

  • Pretty wraps or capes that show off your baby bump

Accessories That Make Your Photos Pop

The right accessories can make your winter photos even better:

  • Cute knitted scarves or wraps

  • Stylish winter boots (bring a clean pair for photos!)

  • Nice gloves or mittens

  • A flower crown with winter berries and evergreens

  • Pretty snowflake jewelry

What to Bring to Your Winter Session

Don't forget to pack:

  • Extra layers and outfit options

  • Waterproof boots and warm socks

  • Lip balm and moisturizer (winter air is so dry!)

  • Hair stuff to fix static from winter hats

  • Snacks and water to keep your energy up
